What's worse than dying? Watching everyone you know die a slow, painful death. Watching every single other person on Earth die is bad, too, but not as bad as seeing everyon you love die and probably not as bad as dying. Call it a close third.
For centuries, Aliens have tried to take over Mildville en route to occupying the entire planet. After developing a new alien ultravirus, three aliens were sent from their home planet to infiltrate Earth culture. These aliens assumed the bodies of an unsuccessful gambler, a freaky but never-heard-of singer, and a man who had just murdered his own TV star brother.
The virus gave immunity to any human who was injected with it. The virus itself is the vaccine, oddly enough. To keep things low key and reduce the chance of humans finding the vaccine before a large number of them got sick, the aliens had orders to infect one and only one, patient zero: Evan.
In finding and choosing their patient zero, these aliens stepped into the lives of those they assumed. And loved it. A rift grew between the alien assuming Paula's body and the one assuming Andy Chambers'. While Paula was enjoying the high life of rigged gambling, she knew their operative was far more important. Andy, always the carefree member of the crew, seemed to be enjoying her rock star life far too much.
The final straw was at the Mildville Museum party, where Paula overheard Amer Wilson telling Andy Chambers she was his favorite singer. Paula knew Amer hated her style of music and gender-bending identity, the fact that someone of his stature would kowtow to Andy was too much for Paula. Knowing she couldn't infect a fellow alien, Paula instead chose to slip the virus into Amer's drink. He had always annoyed her, and this new twist sent her over the top in a moment of vengeance.
By the next day, Paula was already regretting her decision. Alien protocol was strict, and when Amer was found to be resistant to the disease, an investigation would surely be had. Who knows what punishment would be assigned for betraying a plan as significant as a planetary invasion. Probably being forced to work in the alien research center, where subjects are forced to play Mildville to the point of insanity. Things weren't looking good.
The obvious plan was to murder Amer. With this intent, Paula stepped aboard the S.S. Mildville. However, her plans changed when Evan announced he was going to change his will, leaving all the money to the hospital. His sudden interest in saving the world was not good for the virus infection plan. So Paula decided to nip it in the bud and murder Evan. Because Amer was the backup patient zero, the aliens would go ahead with infecting him with a virus he already had (two of them unknowingly), and none would be the wiser as to the true origin of his sickness.
Late at night, when most of the ship was sick from a horrible buffet prepared by the unrelated Kevan Hoovler, Paula teleported into Evan's chamber. She quickly garrotted the shocked Evan before he could react. Teleporting away, she thought she had committed the perfect crime. But she left one important clue behind: Her severed, bloody, razor-sharp alien fingernail. The murder weapon.

Farrell Wins Best Detective Quiz
It's only natural that Farrell would win this award after cracking the case by identifying the murder weapon. On the final quiz, he was the only one who guessed that Paula teleported into my room. Annie and Judy both gave quite creative answers. Good job everyone and thanks for playing!

I'm cut-and-pasting my text doc with all the back stories. These may have been tweaked very very slightly when I sent them, but I believe they closely resemble what I sent.
Mildville Murder Characters:
PM Amer Wilson
Secrets: You aren't pleased to see Andy Chambers aboard, who won't stop bragging about you mentioning you were his/her biggest fan (not really true, you just said it to be polite) at a "Save Lake Mildville" fundraiser earlier in the year. Now that he/she's a big superstar, it's pretty annoying that he/she keeps announcing it.
At this same "Save Lake Mildville" fundraiser held in the Museum of Mildville, you contracted a rare oral disease. In fact, scientists and doctors have yet to identify it, and you have no symptoms. You are hoping the well known virology department at Barton Memorial Hospital, headed by Dr. Judy Q. Quizzleberry, might be able to help. Your aides, who monitor you constantly, say you contracted the disease by accidentally picking up someone else's cup. Which is odd, because it was a cup of strawberry soda, vodka, and a buillion cube which is your own creation. Your aids have presented you with a list of everyone who was at that party and is also coming, tonight. Besides the aforementioned Andy, also present at the "Save Lake Mildville" fundraiser were: Mike Magoo, Dr. Judy Q. Quizzleberry, Colonel Kyle Swiftborne, and Paula Sharpe.
After you find out how to identify the virus and get cured, your dream is to star in some sort of lucrative TV show on the Mainville TV network. For two years, Son Blazenbeard has had the most popular show on Mainville TV, "One Dozen Kids on Welfare." But, for the last six months, his behavior has been a bit off. You've sent administrative spies to follow him. From their reports, you have reason to believe their may have been some foul play in the hunting accident half a year ago that killed Son's playboy twin brother, and left Son with a facial injury for which he wears an eyepatch.
Chris Supiron is aboard, you butted heads with the former C.I.A. director and eventually got him removed from his position.
Stepping aboard, you are shocked to see how many military brass there are. Colonel Kyle Swiftborne is a goody-two-shoes American with whom you've butted heads a couple of times. Chris Superion is the former director of the CIA, whom you got pulled from office over a minor scandal, when he disagreed with your policy of sending home all known spies in Canada who couldn't hold their liquor. Dan Pouliere is suspected of having some shady dealings with North Koreans, possibly over arms trades. Also, you're relatively sure you've seen Annie McDermitt hanging out with the CIA director at social meetings, although you're not sure why a diving instructor would be at those events.
----------
Annie McDermitt
-
Secrets: For months, you've been on the trail of a nuke operation. You know that Evan Hoovler has provided the funds for a France-to-North Korea nuke trade. You're hear to get find super-incriminating dirt on Evan, as you have no concrete evidence yet. In addition, you want to figure out who among Evan's contacts is providing the technological know-how for this deal.
Also aboard is CIA director with whom you've worked for many years, Chris Supiron. Most people believe the cover story that he was kicked out after butting heads with PM Amer Wilson. Actually, this was a front to get some of the attention off of Chris during his lower-profile missions. You are confused and a bit frustrated, you thought this was a solo mission and his presence is going to make it difficult to stay undercover.
While researching the passenger manifest, you learned that Farrell Boyle is surprisingly broke, while Paula Sharpe has turned her winnings into investments that have increased her wealth tenfold.
---- Skipper Mike MaGoo
- Skipper has been serving under Evan Hoovler for 12 years. You dream of making your own casino. Many times you've pitched this to Evan, and has always been shot down with no explanation.
Mcgoo went behind Evan's back to work with Andy Chambers to make her Rotating Restaurant into a casino. Chambers wants to move forward on a casino, but is reluctant to do so with Evan as a potential competitor. Plus, as it turns out, Evan is the only one they know who can pony up the billions needed for the project.
Evan used to fix races for you at the track, but he has recently cut this off as a plan to "go straight."
Another goal of yours is to get your ship skills on the air. The owner of Mainville television, Farell Boyle, will be in attendance on the SS Mildville. You are hoping to pitch him some sort of sailing adventure show.
You have also been moonlighting as the captain of the Pollyanna riverboat gambling casino, which is owned in secret by CIA agent Chris Supiron. You thought this would help you gain some knowledge in the riverboat casino industry, but Supiron won't let you in on anything. He even outlawed you from attending a secret wedding aboard the riverboat.
You've seen Erik Stoneburner frequent the casino for many years, although he stopped coming around the last few months.
Evan is giving Farrell a horrible deal for the TV Station and Newspaper. This makes you wonder if Farrell is hard up for money.
-----
Farell Boyle
You also own the Barton Memorial Hospital, although not many people realize this as you contributed the funds anonymously. However, the hospital has been a huge fund-sink, and is facing foreclosure unless you can raise a huge donation. You supect Dr. Judy Quizzleberry realizes that the hospital's finances are in a drastic state.
You would have bought the Mainville Rotating Restaurant in your ill-fated property grab, but fortunately Andy Chambers snatched it up, first. You suspect this whole area is a sour investment.
You are bankrupt, having gambled away what little money was left from the dot-com implosion at the Pollyanna riverboat casino. Which, incidentally, has Mike Magoo (the S.S. Mildville's first mate) as its secretive captain.
The only positive investment you've made lately was going in on Erik Stoneburner's low fat deep fat frying machines. Although, you were always mystified at how Stoneburner got the remaining tens of millions of dollars needed to start the business.
Your new product is a sham. It's a pump-and-dump designed to get you enough money to disappear and enjoy a long retirement in some foreign country. During your stay at the Hotel Mildville, you broke into your on hotel room and "stole" your own plans for your new product. This is part of the ruse to convince people your product is going to be hot. You plan to sell the TV station and Newspaper to Evan. Suspecting you were desperate, Evan gave you a horrible deal for them, however he paid you the entire amount in advance. This boat ride is when you are supposed to sign the papers.
However, all is not lost: Wealthy venture capitalist Dan Poulier will be on board. You are blackmailing him into keeping silent about a nuke trade he is about to broker with Evan in a few weeks. In exchange for your silence, Poulier is giving you more than enough money that, combined with the pump-and-dump profits, will give you enough to disappear for good. Also, Sarah Scoopenheimer is a hot item after her recent robbery article, you are planning to recommend her as an anchor after selling the station to Evan.
You've seen Erik Stoneburner frequent the casino for many years, although he stopped coming around the last few months.
Prime Minister Amer Wilson is aboard, and that irks you. He is constantly having his aides call or meet you to harass you about giving Wilson his own TV show.
-----
Colonel Kyle Swiftborne
-
The secret mission is sending a satellite into space to survey the bottom of Lake Mildville. You are hoping to harness whatever supernatural elements lie down there, and make some sort of super weapon. You are on board because there is hubbub about aliens and ancients and vampires at the bottom of lake mildville. This has increased tourism and urban exploration in the area, jeopardizing the status of your mission. You are aboard the S.S. Mildville to quash these rumors, and to convince Evan to shut down his Lake Mildville tourism business.
You have obtained the info that Dan Poulier owns the Mainville hotel, but downplays his association with it. Hoping to cause a feud between the hotel and the government, you have anonymously tipped off Dan that there is a spy aboard the boat trying to find him. As for the spies specific intentions or identity, you know nothing.
Although not your responsibility, the hubbub of casino activity is a thorn in your side. Not only does the Riverboat bring drunks who stumble around classified areas late at night. Rumor has it Andy chambers bought the Mainville Rotating Restaurant and is trying to turn it into a casino.
You've also come into contact with a mysterious virus that has stumped the boys in Washington. Although the case is restricted to you, you wanted to use your position to help, so you anonymously sent some samples to the Barton Memorial hospital. Samples obtained in meetings of the utmost secrecy between you and Prime Minister Amer Wilson. You believe the virus may be part of some national threat, and are depending upon the Barton Memorial Hospital to find a cure.
In addition, someone has been running an after-hours riverboat casino at the southeast corner of lake Mildville. You suspect it's one of the illustrious local celebrities aboardn the ship, and you hope to discover who. This is more of a moral chore, as it mostly falls outside your jurisdiction as a high-ranking military officer.
--
Andy Chambers
-
You would like to continue your celebrity status, even if all humans die. So you bought the Mildville Rotating Restaurant into a casino hotel where you will have a permanent venue to play for your invading alien brethren. You've also contacted Erik about promoting boxing matches in the casino (of course, you haven't told him that this will be a wasteland for humanity and aliens will cheer these fights on to the death). Your main liason for this has been Skipper Mike Magoo, who works the Riverboat Casino. You need Evan to invest money though, this project could cost billions. Mike Magoo's attempts to get Evan interested in investing in his own casino have been shot down repeatedly.
One of the most significant points in your career was when Canadian PM Amer Wilson told you he was your number one fan. Using his endorsement boosted you into the limelight, from where you became the hottest-selling act in the industry.
Most importantly, you are an alien. Along with Paula and Son, you are part of an extra-terrestrial trio that is planning to infiltrate the world with an oral disease. Ground zero is this cruise. You are counting on there being so many world influences that the disease will rocket around the planet. Your ideal patient zero is Evan Hoovler, whose ferry business puts him in touch with a wide range of celebrities and dignitaries. Should something happen to Evan, the backup plan is to infect Amer as patient zero. You only want to infect one person, though, since the carrier becomes immune.
Meeting boxing legend Erik Braa aboard the ship, you try to shake his hand and realize he has no ability to grasp your hand due to a lifetime of punching.
You've also received alien intelligence that the Friendlyville Space Center is launching some sort of satellite. This didn't strike you as too critical, so you have yet to inform Paula and Son.
--------
Erik Stoneburner
-
Paula was at your last match, you imagine she had a fix in. At the time you noticed she was hanging out with a man and a woman, but your memory is hazy. You are certain, however that this man and woman are aboard the S.S. Mildville.
Evan paid you to tank your last match. You needed money after losing a bunch at the PollyAnna Riverboat and casino several years ago. You noticed at the time that Mike Magoo was the captain of that ship, but you still don't know who the owner is. Also, you noticed that Farrell Boyle seems to be one of the Riverboat's biggest clients.
During one of your several covert meetings with Evan, you noticed that tech investor Dan Poulier was lurking around.
Also, while getting the payoff, you accidentally overheard Evan taking a payment from someone in exchange for preventing Mike Magoo from starting a riverboat casino.
Andy Chambers has approached you about promoting fights for her. She says she plans to turn the Mainville Rotating Restaurant into a casino,
---------------
Chris Supiron
You weren't actually kicked out of the C.I.A. This is just a cover because your popularity was interfering with your missions.
You are secretly here to bust up a supernatural ring of villains. Whether they are aliens or werewolves or witches, your intelligence does not say. But it does say that they are aboard the S.S. Mildville.
Annie McDermitt is your best top secret field agent, you desire her presence in this but do not have the clearance to tell her about the supernatural. So you have sent her aboard to bust up a separate nuke ring going on aboard the ship.
You secretly own the riverboat casino. TO the best of your knowledge the only two people who know this are your secret skipper, Mike Magoo, and Judy Q. Quizzleberry. Quizzleberry married Mike's brother (unbeknownst to Mike) aboard the boat amidst rushed and hushed circumstances. Once the nuke deal goes through, the fate of the hotel is ambiguous which means you might lose your main source of riverboat patrons.
-----
Sarah Scoopenheimer
-- One fact you never published in your report was that the Hotel robbery was done with lockpicks, but the Barton Memorial burglar left absolutely no traces of entry or exit, whatsoever.
The Friendlyville Space Center burglary was committed by you. Using the string of other robberies as cover, you broke into the Space Center and got your next big scoop: Colonel Kyle Swiftborne's secret military operation involves sending a satellite into space to survey the bottom of Lake Mildville.
You are using your successful robbery article as leverage to get your dream job: Full time reporter for the Mainville News, or television anchor for Mainville TV. Owner Farrell Boyle is into it, you are most definitely going to get an offer next week after a flurry of interviews.
One enigma on whom you'd love to report is tech wizard Dan Poulier. He makes long sojourns across the world, claiming they are for "spiritual enlightenment." But all his coworkers whom you've interviewed say he's a shallow sleazebag, so you suspect there might be something more to his trips, especially since he semi-covertly owns the Mildville hotel.
-----
Paula Sharpe
You are really an alien. Along with Andy Chambers and Son Blazenbeard, you have spent the past three months infiltrating the higher-ups of the American government and entertainment industry. The purpose: to infect the world with a symptom-less disease that causes death in about six months. The person who is infected becomes immune, that way they can live on to keep communicating the diseasae.
Evan fixed the Stoneburner match for you, giving you enough initial money to make a killing on his fixed track races. In exchange for taking a dive, Evan loaned Stoneburner $25 million to get his business of the ground. After taking his cut of the scam's profits, Evan shied away from the notion of running another con.
Your goal aboard the ship is to infect Evan: your research indicates he has connections with a motleyed variety of stars, which makes him the ideal patient zero. The plan is to infect him on board the ship.
One small hitch, though: At a party two months ago at the Museum of Mildville, you couldn't resist infecting Prime Minister Amer Wilson. He was being a jerk as usual, so you copied his favorite drink (Strawberry Soda, vodka, and a boullion cube) and filled it full of infection. Sure it was mean and against intergalactic invasion protocol, but damn if Amer wasn't being annoying (he told that tone-def Andy Chambers that he was her #1 fan- sheesh!)
Now, you regret that, as if you are found out you risk a stern lecture or even a demotion. Certainly your alien brethren will know something is amiss when Amer doesn't die from infection (because you made him an immune patient zero). Thanks to your gambling wins plus an impressive portfolio of investments, you have amassed twenty million dollars in wealth.
-------- So, to tidy things up, you murdered Evan. You teleport into his safe room and garrotted him with your sharp, curved alien nails. This gets you off the hook because Amer is the backup patient zero, should something happen to Evan. So, Evan dies, you guys "infect" an already-infected Amer, and nobody realizes you slightly betrayed the plan for world domination.
-------
Dr. Judy Q. Quizzleberry
Naturally, you'd love to dive to the bottom of Lake Mildville. But Annie changes the subject each time you bring it up.
Evan's lake tourism business has brough a lot of amateur sleuths to the area. You love it, Lake Mildville now has the mystique of Area 51, without all of the barbed wire.
Secretly, Dr. Quizzleberry has married Skipper Magoo's brother in a covert ceremony aboard the Pollyanna Riverboat and Casino, the ceremony presided over by none other than its owner, Chris Supiron. To the best of your knowledge, not even Skipper Magoo knows this, and another thing that possibly only Margaret knowsis that Evan's will leaves all his money to the skipper. When Evan passes on from his high-profile, high-risk lifestyle, you plan to crowd in on the inheritance and use the money and the boat to fully investigate Mildville.
Based on tips through an anonymous contact claiming to be U.S. military, you have been studying a mysterious virus that is like nothing you've studied before. Your contact let it slip that there might be infected people aboard the S.S. Mildville. A virus mystery and a Mildville mystery is like a double dream come true for you.
Also, you are excited to meet Son Blazenbeard. Rumor has it he may actually be his ne'er-do-well twin brother. A simple blood sample would be all you need to figure it out, although you'd have to get Son's permission due to medical ethics.
Although he likes to keep it secret, it's no mystery to a local expert such as you that Dan Poulier owns the Mainville hotel.
Sarah Scoopenheimer is a patient of yours. She has crippling arthritis all over her hands.
After getting your last ten budget requisitions denied, you strongly suspect the Barton Memorial Hospital is out of money. Its secret owner, Farrell Boyle, might not have as deep of pockets as everyone thinks.
-------------------
Dan Poulier
- Posing as a spiritualist, you travel to developing nations and finance nuke deals using your technological skills and Evan Hoovler's deep pockets. Currently, you have a deal worked out between France and North Korea, and should profit handsomely even after paying Evan his $10 billion cut of the deal.
You own the Mainville hotel. It's a side business mainly to facilitate money laundering should you need to do some on the quick. Because of this, you downplay your association with the hotel, although this information is publicly avaiable.
You've been anonymously tipped that there is a spy aboard the boat, sent to break up your deal. Naturally, identifying this spy is a key concern.
You are convinced that Farrell Boyle is a talentless lucksack, and that his new product is nothing but a sham. To make things worse, he's been blackmailing you to keep silent about the nuke trade to the tune of several million dollars. You are happy that your last extortion payment ($1 million) is coming up and you can finally be done with this complicated nuke deal.
--------------
Son Blazenbeard
-- You are actually an alien who body-snatched Son's twin brother immediately after the twin murdered Son and took his identity. Along with two other body-snatchers, posing as Andy Chambers and Paula Sharpe, you have been working for the last three months to plan a virus outbreak. By mingling with A-Listers, you've managed to secure passage with Evan. Evan's unique interaction with celebrities from all over make him an ideal patient Alpha. The disease has no symptoms, except upon blood analysis, but is fatal to anyone who contracts it. Whomever you give the disease to become immune, however, which is why your goal is to only start with one patient zero. Should something happen to Evan before you can infect him, the backup plan is to make the globe-trotting Amer Wilson your immune patient zero.
Interestingly, while staying at the hotel Mildville in preparation for your trip, you overheard Evan mentioning his will leaves everything to Mike Magoo.
Also, some gossiping interns at the television station told you that Evan is going straight and will soon quit funding illegal activities. It's a semi-well known fact that he fixes races at the track.
You've seen Sarah Scoopenheimer around the studio a lot lately. Rumor is she's being interviewed for an anchor position after her recently blockbuster article.
Meeting boxing legend Erik Braa aboard the ship, you try to shake his hand and realize he has no ability to grasp your hand due to a lifetime of punching.
Andy Chambers asked if you were interested in heading up a comedy club in her casino hotel she plans on building when the network shuts down. You're pretty interested, since it sound like a more stable gig than the network. In ordder to build her casino, though, she needs a billion dollars. She's hoping to talk Evan into funding it.

So I still have one unanswered question.. Who did Judy marry? I know it's not important to the story or the results or whatever but I'm super curious. Is it just "Mike's Brother" someone not in the game? or is it one of the characters?

I think this was the key piece of information that was missing and why we wanted people to post their back stories.

I am still curious about THIS. How could I not know these two things? Only female aliens have that nail. Your planet raises males and females in complete isolation until mating, so you never learned that fact or saw a fingernail. Only female aliens can teleport. Again, lack of intergender education is the culprit, here. I would strongly advise approaching your alien council district representative and demanding more alien tax money be spent on schools.

Reading this, two years later, I realize that WOW! I used to smoke a lot of weed.

* * * Farrell Wins Best Detective Quiz It's only natural that Farrell would win this award after cracking the case by identifying the murder weapon. On the final quiz, he was the only one who guessed that Paula teleported into my room. Annie and Judy both gave quite creative answers. Good job everyone and thanks for playing! Good Lord, I used to smoke all the weed

Holy crap, this isn't even the first time I've had this revelation
