Koyaanisqatsi - No narration, just footage of various things happening, meant to show the connection of all nature, and to contrast the world that created us with the world that we created. The title is a Hopi word meaning "life out of balance." It's a perfect contemplation for what made the world so fertile for pandemics. One of the scenes is a rocket blasting off in very slow motion. It really helps to sink in the contrast between what's happening there in a few seconds after seeing a ton of canyons and hoodoos. There's sped up footage of a food court at a mall, and there's a long shot of flying over this field of flowers, and you just wonder when the hell it's going to end, how much contiguous land is just this flower monoculture. The scale is incredible.
Look Who's Back (2015) - Based on a novel of the same name. Adolf Hitler, the main character and narrator, is magically zapped into the future and discovers to his surprise that Germany lost the war but wasn't wiped out by the people that he believed responsible for all of Germany's woes. A desperate TV producer finds him, thinking he's just a good actor who never breaks character and carries him around to produce a reality show. Basically they get him on the air for ratings and people love it, and he becomes very popular. I think some of the scenes they do for the reality show are candid. He goes into one of the white national splinter party's office and just trash talks them, calling them weaklings with no serious identity. They also show someone going up to scold them for going around looking like Hitler like it's all well and good for someone to say he's Hitler and to see people participate and treat him kindly. But that's one person out of so many more who like playing a part, knowing what gesture to do, it excites them. I think the plausibility of the reactions depicted in the movie is worth chewing over.
Encounters at the End of the World (2007) - Werner Herzog goes to Antarcitca so you can see what it's like to live there. It's a grind, to be sure. To go from the main base out to a camp, they have to get training in how to stick together and rescue someone from the outhouse during a blizzard. The most incredible part of the documentary is the sound that a certain bubbling effect makes with a certain echo condition. It really sounds like it was made by a synthesizer, or a spaceship. But it's just interactions of ice, air, and water.

Just watched "The Platform" on Netflix. If you like biting metaphor told through the lens of horror, this is my top recommendation from 2019
We've also been watching Amazon's Tales from the Loop as a family, but you really have to pay attention to the age rating for each individual episode, they change. When it's rated okay for kids it's the most cerebral sci fi for a family audience I've seen in a while.

Oh that's beautiful, he runs a D&D game at one point, he makes the show stop-motion animated for Christmas, and re-enacts tons of movies

If you like 5-star-rated Julia Roberts family movies and crying for 2 straight hours, my family quite enjoyed Wonder on Amazob.

Extinction on Netflix is a decent alien invasion thriller with a twist.

We've also been watching Amazon's Tales from the Loop... I started that, realized it required full attention, and put it on hold until I can devote the necessary time to it.

I know a couple people who are watching all of the Marvel movies in chronological order during the quarantine. It’s a good time to watch all the really long movies or trilogies or all of Star Wars.
Has anyone seen Passengers with Jennifer Lawrence and Chris Pratt? I think the story is really interesting.

One of my friends is doing "Movies that take place within a single day"
Any recommendations? I realize you can play fast with the rules but I was not counting something like "For Love of the Game", which takes place during the course of a baseball game but is primarily flashbacks. I don't know I'd actually recommend that piece of cinematic bait and switch anyway. The movie is tolerable to me because I am a Tigers fan and Kevin Costner's character plays for them in the movie. Other than that, it's a dull romantic drama thinly disguised as a baseball movie.
Recommendations I came up with: Ferris Bueller's Day Off It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World 12 Angry Men

That's basically one day, right? Airplane! (actually watched this one with my son this morning)
